Michael Jackson & Bubbles in Sculpture
New Record For Koons At Auction
On May 15, 2001, Jeff Koon's sculpture 'Michael Jackson and Bubbles' (see related news item dated April 19, 2001) was sold for US$ 5,615,750 at Sotheby's spring contemporary art auction in New York, USA, setting a new record for the artist and obliterating the previous mark of $1,817,500 million. The price, paid by an anonymous bidder, was well above its pre-sale estimate of US$ 3-4 million. The large porcelain sculpture, created in 1988, is one of three in a set created by the contemporary artist. It was described by Sotheby's as melding "pop culture and high art."
